2001 August 11 - Big Spencer Mountain |
|
Katahdin from Big Spencer Mtn |
This 3230 foot mountain is a short hike but has some steep sections (assisted by wooden ladders). Great views of Katahdin, north Maine woods. |
Directions
From Greenville, travel approximately 18 miles north on Lily Bay Road. Continue through Kokadjo. Road soon becomes gravel; turn left at the first fork in the road. 1.5 miles beyond this point continue straight ahead (do not turn left toward Spencer Pond Camps). At the next junction continue straight (do not turn toward Medawisla Camps). Continue past where the checkpoint used to be at Sias Hill. About 4 miles past this point, turn left just past the wooden bridge. Continue straight ahead on this road. The trail head is approximately 6 miles in on the left. |
Trail
The first mile of the trail winds along an old, partly overgrown road to the warden's cabin. From here the trail turns left right in front of the cabin and becomes a narrow foot path in need of maintenance. There are no trail markers but it is easily followed, becoming quite steep in places. Wooden ladders (still in good condition) assist on the really steep parts. It is possible to make it without using the ladders but this will require a few rock scrambles. |
